FileVoyager

FileVoyager is a free dual-pane file manager for Windows that bundles a file viewer, media player, archive tool, folder comparison and a duplicate finder into one program. It suits sysadmins and helpdesk technicians who want an Explorer replacement for their own workstation or a portable toolkit on a USB stick. A FileVoyager download is offered as a regular setup and as a portable edition.

It is developed by Rachid Lihemdi and updated several times a year: the current release, 26.9.6 from September 2026, added folder analytics in the viewer and Archive/Unarchive commands on the central toolbar.

How sysadmins use it

Compare a deployment folder with a file share

1. Open the local build or package folder in the left pane.
2. Open the target share in the right pane using its UNC path, for example \fs01appspayroll.
3. Run the folder comparison tool to list files that are new, newer or missing on each side.
4. Review the differences, then synchronise in the direction you need. Run it on a copy first if the share is in production use.

Clean up duplicates before a share migration

1. Start the Duplicate File Finder on the share or a department folder.
2. Filter by size or type to skip small files and focus on ISO images, installers and video.
3. Review each group before removing anything, and prefer sending copies to the Recycle Bin over a permanent delete so mistakes can be undone.

Check a suspicious file

1. Select the file and open the hash tool.
2. Use the VirusTotal check from the hash tool to see whether the file is already known as malicious.
3. Open the file in the built-in hex or text viewer to inspect it without executing it.

Find out why a file cannot be deleted

1. Try the operation; if the file is locked, FileVoyager reports the process that holds it.
2. Close that application or stop its service, then repeat the operation.

Install and first run

• Setup edition: a normal Windows installer for Windows Vista to Windows 11. Settings are saved immediately when you change them (since 26.4.26), so a crash does not lose your layout.
• Portable edition: unpack it to a folder or USB drive and run it without installation, which is handy on customer PCs where you do not want to leave software behind.
• Codecs: an optional VLC codec package extends media playback; skip it on servers.
• Admin rights: not required to run it, but copying into protected folders such as Program Files still needs an elevated session.

Limitations

• Windows only; no macOS or Linux builds.
• No SFTP or SCP: remote access is limited to FTP and FTPS, and SFTP is still on the developer’s to-do list. For SSH-based transfers use a dedicated client.
• Not open source since version 16.12.10 (December 2016); it is freeware under the developer’s own EULA.
• A single developer maintains it, so release timing and support depend on one person.
• It is a desktop tool: no scripting language or command-line batch mode comparable to automation-focused file managers.

FileVoyager vs alternatives

Multi Commander is the closest free alternative: also dual-pane and Windows-only, with a stronger focus on scripting and extensions, while FileVoyager is stronger at viewing and media. When your work is mostly on Linux servers, WinSCP covers SFTP and SCP, which FileVoyager lacks. For scheduled one-way or two-way folder synchronisation rather than manual comparison, FreeFileSync is the better fit.
