Advanced IP Scanner

Advanced IP Scanner is a free Windows network scanner from Famatech. Help-desk staff and sysadmins use it to list every device on a LAN in seconds and then act on it straight from the results. What sets it apart from a plain ping sweep is the right-click menu. From one scan you can open RDP, Radmin, HTTP, FTP or a shared folder on a found host. You can also send Wake-on-LAN or shut a machine down remotely. It is a practical first-response tool, not a monitoring system.

How sysadmins use it

Find an unknown device on the office LAN

1. Start the program and click the IP button on the toolbar. Choose Current computer subnetwork, or type a range such as 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.254.
2. Click Scan.
3. Sort by Manufacturer or MAC address to identify the new printer, access point or phone.
4. Use File > Save as to export the list to CSV for your asset sheet.

Wake a group of PCs before patching

1. Scan while the machines are on, so their MAC addresses are recorded, and add them to Favourites.
2. Save the favourites list to XML with File > Save as.
3. On patch night, load the list, select the machines and choose Wake-On-LAN from the context menu (or Actions > Wake-on-LAN).
4. Rescan after a couple of minutes to confirm they are up.

Wake-on-LAN must be enabled in each PC’s firmware and network adapter settings. Magic packets are broadcasts, so they normally do not cross routers unless directed broadcast is configured.

Jump into a server quickly

1. Scan the server VLAN and right-click the host.
2. Pick RDP from the context menu (or Actions > RDP) for Windows, or use the HTTP/HTTPS entries to reach a switch, printer or iLO web interface.
3. For SSH, set the path to your client (for example PuTTY) under Settings > Options > Misc first.

Install and first run

Windows only. The installer offers two choices: Install, which adds Start-menu shortcuts and updates, or Run, which launches the portable edition with no installation. Admin rights are needed for a normal install.

Scan settings. Under Settings > Options > Performance, “high accuracy scanning” finds more hosts but is slower. The scanning-rate slider trades speed against network load. Turning off resources you do not need (for example FTP or HTTP detection) also speeds up large scans.

Common gotchas.

• Windows Defender Firewall on the scanned hosts can hide shares and NetBIOS names. Devices that drop ICMP may appear only with high-accuracy scanning.
• Remote shutdown needs an account with administrative rights on the target, and the target must allow remote administration through its firewall.
• MAC addresses and manufacturers are only visible for hosts in your own broadcast domain.
• Radmin connections need Radmin Server on the target and a Radmin Viewer on your PC. The scanner can point to a portable Radmin Viewer.

Limitations

• Windows only: there is no macOS, Linux, Android or iPhone version.
• No documented command-line interface for scheduled scans. For scripted sweeps, use Angry IP Scanner’s CLI or nmap.
• No custom port lists: it only checks the services it knows. Famatech ships port scanning as a separate tool, Advanced Port Scanner.
• No history, alerting or maps; it is a point-in-time scan.
• The vendor does not publish a changelog with dates, so it is hard to tell when the build last changed.

Advanced IP Scanner vs alternatives

Angry IP Scanner is open source (GPL-2.0), runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and has a command-line mode and configurable port checks. It has no built-in RDP, Radmin or shutdown actions. Yes. Choose Run instead of Install in the setup program and it starts without installing anything.
